"The 'Time' Of My Life"

Saturday evening, March 1, 2008. 25th Midwest Backgammon Championships at the Wyndham Lisle Hotel near Chicago. This is not a backgammon peeve. I am about to be treated to one of the most exciting experiences of my life.

I’m in the Championship quarterfinals. One more win puts me “in the money” with ABT points. My opponent Lucky Nelson has just requested a clock. Time clocks (especially Bronstein-type clocks) are now commonly used at ABT events to keep play on schedule. I’ve had little experience playing with a clock, so a director came over, explained how to use it, and sat with our match until I was comfortable with the mechanics . . .
